Chiropractic, Sports, Posture and Performance in Cedar Rapids IA

Most professional teams and a lot of colleges now either employ or deal directly with chiropractors. It makes logical sense that people who push their bodies to extreme limits would reach out to doctors of chiropractic. The benefit for these athletes is an increased range of motion, decreased pain & hopefully better performance, and decreased injuries.

The purpose of this post isn't to brag on chiropractic and how it has helped million-dollar athletes...even though that is pretty cool. The purpose of this post is to tell you that you don't have to be a "professional" to have sports or sporting-type injuries, or to be helped by a Cedar Rapids IA chiropractor.

Chiropractic In Cedar Rapids IA for everyday athletes

Most of the patients that we see walk through the door are people like you...weekend warriors or people trying to be healthy and improve physically. Whether it be running, biking, CrossFit or organized sports people are participating, playing and a lot of times hurting themselves. The biggest problem with these injuries is that many of them, I believe, could have been prevented.

This isn't a blog post on why you need to be adjusted 45 times in 2 weeks and your problems will be solved. Most of you, I hope, realize that we at CRC are not going to try and sell you on a long, expensive plan of care. I do want to help people realize that there is a proper form in almost everything we do and a lot of times they are either the same or very similar and complete each other.

I will continue to blog on proper postures and positions but I want to highlight the fact that some of your sporting injuries may not be from participating in the sport at all. This isn't to say that sports don't cause problems and the need for intervention by your local chiropractor. Traumas do happen. I want us to zoom out a little and look at our daily habits, daily postures, and everyday activities. When you stop and think about it most of us are really only doing the sports or recreational activities an hour or two a day tops. We are sitting at our desks for 6. Sleeping for 8 (hopefully). Sitting on the couch for 2. In other words the potential for problems with something like sitting at your computer desk for 6 hours a day is in some ways more likely to cause problems than a 30 min run.

Let's take a look at a high school boys pitcher that I saw a while back. He presented with right shoulder pain that hurt while he pitched. We examined him and found a few things orthopedically but something that really stood was the fact you could see his shoulders were rolling forward while he was sitting on the exam table. Do you suppose sitting in classes all day with his shoulder slumped forward was a big factor in his shoulder pain? Absolutely. It took more than a little posture education to get this patient better but can you imagine what would have happened if someone had educated him on the effects of his posture 2 years ago? Hopefully, he wouldn't have had this problem and he wouldn't miss some playing time.

If you're reading this and think that you may have some issues with your posture ask the people around you. Ask your coworkers or friends to watch you while work sometime or even take a picture of you when you're not expecting it. You'll be amazed at what you find.

If you want a professional's opinion or exam than we at CRC would love a chance to show you what we do. As always our phone number is (319) 395-9897.
